Recyclable Indoor Seed Starting Project

It’s time to start preparing for those spring and summer home gardens! Don’t want to spend a fortune this year on supplies? Here is a quick and easy tip for starting those seeds indoors using recycled Stonyfield yogurt cups.

Disclosure: This article was written in connection with Stonyfield Yo-Getters and free seeds were provided to me in order to facility my post. Opinions are mine.

Yippy! Can you hear me screaming it from the roof tops? Spring has finally arrived to Michigan! (I should probably knock on wood right about now so I don’t jinx us! Knock!) Since the winters in Michigan are so unbearably long. . . when spring arrives it is like a complete re-birth. It all starts with the melting of snow, and then a small peek of a spring bulb starts to pop through the soil. The air begins to smell fresh and damp, unlike the burning nose feeling you get during the winter. Slowly, but surely, the days start to warm up and life begins again.

Usually, each year, as soon as the first spring bulb pops up, I am itching to get outside to start planting in my veggie garden behind my house. Normally I am ahead of the game in the winter and have already winter sowed my seeds. But this year time got away from me and I am completely unprepared for the start of spring. (Physically, not mentally. I am ALWAYS mentally prepared for spring.) But that’s ok! Even though I didn’t winter sow my seeds this year, I can still start my seedlings indoors and have them ready to transplant outside when the time is right.

#ad Indoor Seed Starting Tips

Much like my winter sowing technique, I wanted my indoor seedlings to be environmentally friendly as well. For this reason I like to choose organic seeds and reuse old household containers as seed starter cups. For my outdoor sowing method, I used old milk jugs as greenhouses, but for my indoor seedlings I have found that Stonyfield yogurt cups are the perfect size to start my seedlings in. Plus, we always have empty cups in abundance in our home.

Creating seedlings using recycled Stonyfield yogurt cups is easy!

1. Eat and enjoy the yogurt. This step is important and tasty!
2. Wash out the yogurt dish with soap and water.
3. Carefully poke a hole or two in the bottom of the cup to allow for drainage.
4. In a large bucket soak some potting soil with water and mix until moistened.
5. Fill the yogurt cup 3/4 of the way full with potting soil, place a few High Mowing organic seeds on top and cover with more soil to fill.
6. Set your cup in a warm window with sunlight and watch the seedlings grow.

Once the seedlings have reached transplant height and the weather outside is cooperative for planting, remove the seedlings from the Stonyfield cups and transplant them into the ground. The Stonyfield cups may now be recycled or kept to be used again next year.

How to Rock a Twitter Party

So, you’ve been invited to join in a twitter party. . now what? Learning to use twitter can be quite confusing.  I understand, I am still new to the platform and still learning myself. However since I could not find any information on what was going on,  I jumped in head first and taught myself the know how. Hopefully I can shed some light on the subject for you and help you feel ready to join in the fun as well.

First, you will need to sign up for a twitter account. You can find the sign up page here. Once you are a member you can begin to join in twitter parties. What is a twitter party you ask? A twitter party is a group of people who all log into twitter at the same time and tweet with a common hashtag to form a conversation.  Most times a twitter party will take place with a company being a sponsor and free items will be given away to the participants.

What to do before the party starts:
In order to follow along with a twitter party you will need to be following the hosts.  The hosts will be names ahead of time. To follow their tweets simply click “follow” on their twitter handle pages. You should also RSVP for the party on the party page (this is normally also listed in the invite). RSVP’s are commonly collected using a linky or comment form. Simply add your twitter handle (mine is @raisingdickjane) into the form and you have completed your RSVP!

Attending the party:
Each party will have a specific start and end time. Parties normally last for 1 hour. You will need to be present for the entire hour if you want to qualify for a prize, so plan your time accordingly. While these parties can take a lot of time out of your schedule, the probability that you will win a prize is great. Most parties give away 20 or more prizes within their scheduled hour and have around 100 guests. I usually walk away with a prize about 50% of the time.

As the party progresses you will see tweets from the hosts regarding the product and questions for the participants to answer. It may look something like this:

Q1: What is your favorite color?

You should hit the “reply” button under the question and respond in the following format.

@partyhost  A1: Blue  #party hashtag

Answering in the above format will allow your response to be seen by the host and increase your chances of winning a prize. The most important thing when joining a party is to be active. Respond honestly and quickly to the questions. Speak your mind, and be yourself.  Oh, and the most important thing is to have fun!
Wait a minute! How do I follow along with the twitter party?
When I first started I just used my “home” page to watch for new party tweets from the host. Every time the hosts post a new tweet it will pop up on this page. This is why it is very important to be following the hosts directly.  As I became more comfortable I started using sites such as tweetgridTweetgrid allows you to see every tweet that is coming in with the same hashtag from all of the guests and the hosts. This can move fast and be a bit overwhelming until you are used to it. So start out slow.
How do I know if I won a prize?
If you win the host will call out your handle (remember. . @raisingdickjane?) and either give you a link to click on to enter your shipping information or will ask that you DM them after the party with your info.  If you are asked to DM them, this means Direct Message.  There is a small envelope on your main page, click on it and you can send messages to anyone you follow.

Ok, I want to join a party. How do find a party to attend?
The more people you follow on twitter, the more you will find out what is going on.  Fellow twitter fans will posts announcements when a party is coming up. These tweets will show up in your twitter feed. However to get you started, here is a list of upcoming parties that I will be attending from my favorite host Resourceful Mommy. You can also follow me on twitter and I will be sure to let you know when a party is coming up!

If you have any questions, please feel to ask.  I will make sure to respond to all comments.
I hope to see you at the next party!

Rock On
